Grammar 12: El Presente Actual o Continuo
Gerundio
- Los verbos que tienen dos vocales y acaban en consonante, hacen el gerundio añadiendo 'ing'
Ej. cleaning, reading, sleeping - Los verbos que terminan en dos consonantes también hacen el gerundio añadiendo 'ing'
Ej climbing, fishing, working - Los verbos que terminan en 'o' o en 'w' también hacen el gerundio añadiendo 'ing'
going, sewing, blowing - Ej. Los verbos que terminan en 'e', la pierden antes de añadir el 'ing', write, live...
Ej. writing, living - Los verbos que contienen una sola vocal y acaban en consonante, la doblan para formar el gerundio. Ej. swimming, sitting, stopping
What are you doing? I am sweeping the stairs | we are climbing | I am painting a picture
Verbos de acción: sewing | swimming | painting | climbing | working | painting | sweeping | fishing | sleeping | reading | writing
She is writing a letter | They are doing their homework | He is sewing | I'm fishing | This boy is sleeping
Is he swimming? Yes he is | Are they climbing? Yes, they are | Are you doing your homework
Presente actual o continuo = verbo to be + gerundio.
- En español no suele traducirse por gerundio. I am writing a letter | You are reading a newspaper | He is opening the window
- Se usa cuando se hace algo ahora, no como costumbre. Now, today, tonight
They are coming today | Helen is going to the cinema tonight - Formas afirmativa, negativa, interrogativa, interrogativa-negativa
A: You are coming
N: You aren't coming
I: Are you coming?
I-N: Aren't you coming? - Formas de contestar
What is he doing? He is smoking a cigarette
What is she doing? She is speaking on the telephone
What are they doing? They are selling tickets - Algunos verbos nunca o casi nunca se emplean como Presente Contlnuo: to see, to like, to hear, to want, to know, to belong. I'm writing now | I see him now
