Grammar 19: Oraciones de relativo

Who | Which | That | Whose | What

Who como sujeto: The girl who spoke to you is called Jean.
Se puede sustituir por that: The girl that spoke to you is called Jean.
No se puede omitir

Whom como complemento: The boy whom you saw in the streets is my brother
Puede sustituirse por that, pero normalmente se omite
The boy you saw in the streets is my brother

'Que' es sujeto cuando va inmediatamente delante del verbo.
The boy who came with me is here | El chico que vino conmigo está aquí

'Que' es complemento cuando inmediatamente detrás va un pronombre, un sustantivo...
The boy (whom) I saw yesterday is here | El chico que yo vi ayer está aquí

Whose: The person whose car is in the street is a doctor

Which como sujeto: The canary which sing so beautiful is mine
Se puede sustituir por that: The canary which sing so beautiful is mine

Which como objeto: The dog which I have is very good
Puede sustituirse por that, pero normalmente se omite
The dog that I have is very good | The dog I have is very good

Cuando el pronombre relativo va seguido del verbo to be y de un lugar, con una preposición, se omite el pronombre relativo y el verbo to be
The boy who is in that room es called Bruce | The boy in that room es called Bruce

En algunos casos se emplea that:
Después de un adj. superlativo: This is the longest river that I have ever seen
Después de somebody, anybody, something...: Tell them something that they like

Pronombres relativos con preposición:
The person with whom I went to cinema was my uncle
The person I went to cinema with was my uncle
I lost the knife with which I used to cut the bread
I lost the knife I used to cut the bread with
Con that y preposición al final: This is the girl that I gave the dictionary to
Sin that y preposición al final: This is the girl I gave the dictionary to

Pronombres precedidos de coma: Si una oración empieza por nombre propio, por los demostrativos this, that, como adjetivos, o por el adjetivo posesivo, el pronombre relativo va precedido de coma.

Jhon, who is a good student, is here today | This greyhound, which won the race, is very fast
My father, who is a doctor, is in Engalnd now
