El artículo determinado
- No se emplea:
- Con sustantivos en singular (no contables) y en plural, en un sentido general
Money is necessary. Planes fly. Life is har. I like tea.
- Cuando el sustantiva que da la idea general lleva delante un adjetivo.
Spanish cities are very interesting
- Delante de una profesión seguida de un nombre propio
Captain Wilson. Doctor Smith. Pero: The doctor is conming this afternoon
- Con next y last
I'll be in London next week. I was in París last week
- Con sustantivos como bed, church, school
Go to bed. We go to school in the morning. They study english at school
- Con los puntos cardinales en sentido absoluto
Now we are flying west. Pero: Málaga is in the south of Spain
- Se emplea:
- Con nombres de hoteles y buques: The Hilton Hotel
- Con nacionalidades: The english are..., the french
- Con instrumentos: I play the guitar
- Delante de un adjetivo en forma superlativa: This is the most famous cathedral in Spain
- Cuando hay un pronombre relativo
- Con sustantivos en plural: Books are useful.
Pero: The books (which) I have are useful
- Con sustantivos en singular: I like coffee
Pero: The coffee (which) I drank this morning was very good
- Con sustantivos abstractos: Life is hard
Pero: The life (which) we lead is hard
El artículo indeterminado
- No se emplea
- Delante de algunas palabras como: work, news, weather
I have some work for them. NO "a work"
I have (some) news for you
We have very good weather
- Se emplea
- Delante de sustantivos que designan profesiones: He is a pilot. She is an airhostess
- En expresiones exclamativas: What a nice film!
- En algunas expresiones de medida: We drove the lorry at twenty miles an hour
- Después de las palabras 'such' y 'without': Such a nice day. Without a ticket
- Con las palabras hundred, thousand: A hundred euros. A thousand euros
