Grammar 25: Los adverbios. Parte II
- Detrás del complemento, si éste es corto: The teacher repeated the words slowly
- Delante del complemento si éste es largo: The student repeated slowly the words that the teacher had said
- En forma pasiva, algunos adverbios de modo van delante del participio pasado: The letter was badly written. Jane's work is carefully done
Los adverbios o frases adverbiales de lugar, here, there, by the window, on the table, in the box... se colocan:
- Detrás del verbo principal, si no hay complemento: Jane works here
- Detrás del complemento: Janes write the report here
- Nunca entre verbo y complemento
Los adverbios o frases adverbiales de tiempo, always, never, often, seldom, sometimes, hardly ever, rarely, generally, usually, already, just... se colocan:
- Delante del verbo principal: We sometimes go there. I usually get up at seven o'clock
- Entre el verbo auxiliar y el principal: I have sometimes seen him. He has often been there
- Después del verbo to be y de los verbos defectivos: We are often late for dinner.
He is never here in the afternoon. You must never say that.
Los adverbios o frases adverbiales de tiempo definido, yesterday, today, tomorrow, this morning, now, then... se colocan:
- Detrás del verbo o del complemento directo, si hay: He spoke yesterday | He spoke italian yesterday | She is coming here today | We will go to the theatre tomorrow
- En posición inicial, el adverbio da más énfasis a la idea: Yesterday, he came here.
Tomorrow, we will go to the cinema
- Cuando el complemento directo es otra oración, el adverbio se coloca normalmente detrás de la primera oración para evitar ambigüedad: Mr. Peterson told us yesterday what Jane had done
Mr. Peterson told us what Jane had done yesterday
The play was fairly good.
I know Jane quite well
- También pueden modificar verbos y por lo tanto se colocarían delante de ellos, actually, almost, deeply, quite, really, hardly: I quite undertand them. We deeply regret having done it
- Los adverbios como off, on, away, que acompañan a verbos, por ej: to turn on, to turn off, to take away... pueden ir después del verbo o del complemento directo:
Turn on the radio. Turn the radio on. Take away those books. Take those books away
Turn it on. Take them away
- Manner, place, time = M, P, T (modo, lugar, tiempo): My cousin worked hard there yesterday
- También puede empezarse por el adverbio de tiempo: Yesterday, my cousin worked hard there
